About Dilasa Kendra

Pune Seva Sadan Society, a renowned institution in the educational and social field, was founded in 1909 by Ramabai Ranade at her residence, with a vision to empower women through education.

On June 15, 1982, Honorable Sandhyatai Deorukhkar established Dilasa Kendra, a school for intellectually disabled children, starting with 30 students. This initiative was supported by the former president of the society, Late Nilubhau Limaye. Despite initial challenges, Sandhyatai persevered, receiving valuable support from colleagues like Mrs. Suhasini Sathe.

Dilasa means “relief”—a source of hope for parents of special needs children. The school is dedicated to enhancing the lives of intellectually disabled children. Currently, it serves 100 students aged 6 to 18, including slow learners, children with learning disabilities, and those with Down Syndrome.

Dilasa also runs a training center, Dilasa Training Center in Erandwane to offer a sheltered workshop for intellectually disabled adults above 18 years. Formal education often proves challenging for these individuals due to the rigidity of conventional curriculums, making specialized teaching essential. At Dilasa, a dedicated team of special education teachers, craft teachers, and class helpers work tirelessly to educate and support these students. They are backed by the principal, office staff, and a reliable support team, including bus drivers, assistants, a peon, and a watchman, ensuring smooth daily operations.

The center provides numerous facilities to enhance the well-being and development of its students. These include free homeopathy treatment, nutritious meals, and transportation through school bus. The school is centrally located, making it easily accessible for families. Additionally, parents benefit from an active association that fosters collaboration and support. For students transitioning from school, the Dilasa Training Center serves as a platform to continue skill-building and preparation for adult life.

Healthcare and guidance are integral to Dilasa’s mission. The center hosts a Rapid Diagnosis and Treatment Center and a Guidance Center for Persons with Disabilities, ensuring comprehensive care.
